Alta was Miss Acheson to us. She graduated from Quarryville High School in 1945 and then went through Millersville State College in three years earning a B.S. in math and science. For half a year she taught in a one room school near New Holland, PA and then taught at East Lampeter from 1949 until 1951. During that time she managed to take classes at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a M.S. in mathematics. It was in 1951 that many of us met her for the first time when she joined the staff at TE Junior High School as a science teacher. She took the entire seventh grade on a field trip to her parents’ farm near Quarryville. That was a memorable experience. Alta taught at TE Junior High for four years and then moved to the new Conestoga Senior High School when it opened in 1955. At Conestoga she taught math and science for one year. After that she only taught math. Alta married Richard Fisher in 1958. In 1963 she joined a special state project on algebra. That lasted for one and a half years after which she taught math at West Chester State Teachers College for two years. When her daughter Judith was three, Alta taught at the Baldwin School on a part time basis. Around 1970 the principal at Conestoga prevailed on her to return to Conestoga again as a math teacher. She did and taught there until her retirement in 1986. Alta and her husband have a campsite at the shore, a two week time share at the Outer Banks, they have traveled extensively, she enjoys playing cards and maintaining friendships that go way back.

From France he went to the University of California in Berkeley for one term and then to San Francisco where he worked as a classical music announcer at the classical music radio station KAFE-FM. From San Francisco he traveled to the University of British Columbia where in 1967 he was awarded an M.A. He lectured there for one year and then matriculated at Merton College, Oxford University in England where he was granted a doctorate in 1972. He has been a professor of English at Université Laval in Quebec City, the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Chuck went to Lock Haven State Teacher’s College for two years, left and joined the Upper Main Line Bank in their Berwyn office. In 1961 he married our classmate Jill Reichner. In 1962 he moved to the Paoli office. In 1966 he became an assistant cashier which made him an officer of the bank. Simultaneously he became a loan officer and personnel officer. Part of the reason for so many functions was that the bank was small. The bank merged with Central Penn National Bank in 1970 and Chuck left in 1972 to sell real estate for Dickinson Gallery of Homes which he did until 1974. Then he returned to banking as the branch manager of the Marchwood branch of Inter County Savings and continued there until 1984 when he joined Bryn Mawr Trust as an Assistant Vice President in the mortgage department. In 1987 he was made a Vice President in charge of commercial construction mortgages. In 1990 Chuck left banking for a second time and took position managing rental properties for Morelli Rental Corporation. He remained with Morelli until 1997 when he decided to go back to banking, this time with the Elverson National Bank. In 1999 Chuck went to work for the West Chester branch of the Main Street Bank. He stayed there until 2001 when Sovereign Bank purchased the Main Street Bank. Morelli read about this purchase and phoned Chuck to ask him if he would like to leave banking and return to managing properties. Chuck did and is working for Morelli now with the job title of Vice President of Operations. He enjoys his work. Chuck and Jill have been married for 45 years. He is active in the Lions Club and on the boards of the Chester County Blind Association and the West Chester Senior Center. Following heart by-pass surgery in 2005, Chuck stopped playing in the senior softball league. For enjoyment now Chuck plays golf and visits with his two granddaughters.

Steve studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and did very well. Concurrently he was active in the Mask and Wig Club, the all male musical comedy group founded in 1889. As an aside, the father of our classmate Jill Reichner Frank wrote lyrics for many Mask and Wig songs of the 1930s and 40s. Steve graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. For the next two years he worked for several small architectural firms in Philadelphia. It was in 1964 that his earlier association with the Mask and Wig Club changed the course of his professional career because Penn offered him the chance to return as the Business Manager of Performing Arts. He accepted and worked closely with the club for several years. In 1971 Penn opened the Annenberg Center, a new performing arts center made possible by the generosity of Ambassador Walter Annenberg. Steve was made the Assistant Managing Director of performing arts and the Managing Director in 1975. For 23 years he held that job until his retirement in 1998. The Center presented actors Jose Ferrer, Julie Harris, Rex Harrison, Jason Robards, Richard Gere, Zoë Caldwell, Colleen Dewhurst, Glenn Close, Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp and others. In March of 1982 the Center hosted the Grace Kelly Film Festival as part of the City’s 300th anniversary celebration. The opening night featured Princess Grace, Bob Hope as master of ceremonies, and film stars who had appeared with the Princess including Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Stewart Granger, Celeste Holm, Ricardo Montalban, Rita Gam, Brian Aherne and more. See the photo gallery for a collage picture. Grace Kelly died in an automobile accident the following September. Steve considers his tenure at Penn was as satisfying as he could have asked for. Steve met Marguerite Petrullo, his future wife, at Penn where she was the Assistant Dean of Students. They married in 1968. Their daughter, Allison, was born the next year and a son, Steve, was born in 1972. Both children went on to study and graduate from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1978 Steve and Marguerite relocated from East Goshen Township to the Rosemont/Bryn Mawr area where they now live in a lovely, large Victorian house that was constructed in 1887. While basically sound, his home is a good outlet for Steve’s architectural skills.

Jim was one of ten children and went right to work at Matthews Ford in Paoli after graduation from high school, and then into the Army from September of 1958 for a three year enlistment. He was assigned to the Eighth Infantry Division in Germany where he worked in the motor pool and drove a five ton wrecker. While there he unexpectedly saw our classmate Chester Brown who was directing traffic as an MP. They were able to visit. Bobby (Mex) Barajas (Conestoga 1958, Howellville forever), also in the Army at the time, surprised him with a visit. Following his separation from active duty Jim returned to Matthews Ford and then got a job at Proxylin Products. It was supposed to be a temporary two year job to fill the vacancy caused by Lee Murdock’s (our classmate) pending two year Army enlistment. Because business got better, there was no reason for Jim to leave when Lee returned, and Jim stayed on for a total of 43 years until his retirement in July of 2006. At Proxylin Products he was the Production Coordinator for years. Jim married the former Dorothy Semmers on May 5, 1962. He met Dorothy, who graduated from Downingtown High School in 1958, when he visited one of his older sisters in Glenmoore. Around 1970 John went to work for Dev-Air, the company our classmate, Dick Devaney, founded. John worked there for 29 years and then retired. For amusement John follows NASCAR events and attends the Pocono races. He owns a 1929 Ford Sedan Delivery and a 1952 Ford Custom Line. At an earlier time he owned a 1923 T Bucket Ford. Robert (born 1964)
If we had known how successful this quiet guy would become, we might have paid more attention to him. Central to his success has been a total fascination with everything to do with airplanes. This dates back to an airplane trip that he took to California in 1946. From that time forward he was determined to work in the aircraft industry. After high school graduation, Lane got his military obligation behind him by serving in the US Army for six months. Then he enrolled in Northrop University in Inglewood, CA as a student in aeronautical engineering. In order to be able to attend school full time he worked part time at North American Aviation on the XB-70 bomber project. In 1960, while still in school, he married Patricia. He got his bachelor’s degree in 1962 and went to work full time on the XB-70. It was cancelled in 1963, so he got a job with Aero Commander in Santa Monica and stayed there until 1966. In 1966 he, also, was awarded an M.A. in math from UCLA. He had taken night classes to earn this degree. Then he went to work for a small consulting company, ATS. In 1971 they received a contract with Saunders Aircraft in Gimli, Manitoba, and he was assigned to it. In 1973 he accepted an offer from Saunders to be Vice President of Engineering. Saunders closed in 1976, and Lane established Aero Consulting Services (ACS) which currently employs about one hundred people. ACS provides engineering and certification services for airlines and aircraft manufacturers. The company has offices in Winnipeg, Montreal and Denver. In 1996 Lane bought Northern Aero Industries (NAI). This company manufactures parts and upgrade systems that are distributed world wide. Notice the ACS and NAI in his E-mail provider address. His two sons are married and have a total of five daughters. Lane likes street rods (which he can work on in his six car garage), traveling in street rods, circle track racing, golfing , flying his private plane and playing the piano.

Marshall, Elizabeth Ann Newell (Betsy)
3 St. Jame's GDNS
London W11 4 RB
England 011-44-2076033907
Husband George A.
Child Amy (born 1970)
After graduating from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts with a degree in English literature, Betsy taught high school for a year while waiting for her husband-to-be, George Newell, to finish his MBA at Harvard Business School. After graduation and marriage, Betsy and George moved to and lived in NYC for several years while George worked in the Overseas Department of City Bank. During this period Betsy earned her MA from Columbia University in the teaching of English. Very shortly after her graduation they were posted to London where they have lived ever since – for forty one years! During these many years there have been some seminal events that changed or altered the course of their lives. In 1970 they adopted their only child, Amy, and also lived that same year at Kelmscot Manor in Oxfordshire, the former home of a remarkable and influential 19th century Englishman, William Morris. From this single year in Morris’ home developed a lifelong passion for the English Arts and Craft Movement and the remarkable furniture, pictures, silver, ceramics, etc. produced during this period. In 1972 George and Betsy and another couple bought a beautiful hilltop in Tuscany, Italy with two derelict farmhouses and many out buildings. Years of renovation and gardening followed accompanied by another passion – Italian food! The love of food and the opportunities Europe offered in its culinary institutes allowed Betsy to forgo the teaching of English and open a cooking school in her own home in London which continued for 18 years until her retirement in 2000. The Newells are now in the process of consolidating and simplifying their lives: the home in Tuscany is in the process of being sold, George has retired from his ‘suit and tie’ life and concentrates on his smoked fish business in Nova Scotia, and Betsy is doing (slowly) a Diploma course in Asian Arts at the British Museum. A log home in Nova Scotia beside the St. Mary’s River balances the more hectic urban life in London and quiet contentment replaces the loss of energy that has inevitably occurred.

To prevent being wheelchair bound Judy learned to swim and still swims regularly. For years she would swim about one hour a day, but now it is down to about forty minutes daily. In 1988 she and Jay had a house built on 26 acres of wooded ground surrounded by farmland. They, along with a large variety of birds and animals enjoy the privacy and beauty of the woods. As a hobby Judy has sung since high school days and has been singing in her church choir since 1972. She enjoys movies, plays, concerts, reading and gardening. William (born 1976)
Soon after graduating from West Chester State, Margaret met her husband, William (Bill), an engineer from Wilmington, NC. They married in 1962 and settled in Northern Virginia. Margaret taught in Prince William County, and Bill worked for the Department of Defense. Early on they adopted a son, Daniel, and a daughter, Mary Ellen. To their pleasant surprise, after 11 years, they had a daughter, Beth, and a son, William Jonathan. For many years on their farmette near Manassas they had loads of fun raising their four children, riding their Arab horses, fishing in their farm pond and attempting to grow vegetables. Associated with Bill’s engineering with the Federal Government (DOD and the Department of Energy), Margaret and Bill enjoyed entertaining international scientists and invitational visits to the White House. During these busy career years they greatly enjoyed their vacations to Coastal Del Sol of Spain and snorkeling in the many Caribbean islands. After greatly enjoying teaching, Margaret retired in the early 90s. Bill retired in 1999. Following Bill’s retirement from engineering, they bought their winter home in Fort Myers where they enjoy wildlife photography and kayaking in the southwest of Florida’s many coastal sloughs and estuaries. In 2006, for more relaxing country fun in Amish style, they changed their summer home from Northern Virginia to Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. Rides in the Amish farm countryside are very beautiful, not to mention the memorable aroma! Papa Bill and Grandma greatly enjoy and cherish exciting times with their three grandchildren, Thomas, Mason and Stacey in the Virginia countryside.

Ann majored in Education at Cornell University (1961-1963), while holding an assistantship in Human Ecology's Counseling Service, following her graduation from Penn State in 1961. Sandwiched between graduate work, she took a summer to study German at The Goethe Institut in Murnau, Germany. Her home was with a German family, transportation was by bicycle and some of her free time was spent hiking in the Alps with friends made at school. There was time to explore many parts of Europe and the British Isles before heading back to the U.S. She worked as a New York State Cooperative Extension Agent in Chemung County (1963-1965) and moved her home to Elmira, New York. Flying sailplanes in Elmira, hiking in the Adirondacks and folk dancing at nearby Ithaca became outside fun. Ann's marriage to Fred moved her home to Ithaca, New York (1965-1981).
Working as Homemaker Supervisor for the Family and Children's Service meant hiring, training and placing helpers in homes with emergency needs. A move to New Hampshire was short. Returning to Ithaca brought employment again with Cooperative Extension working at Cornell as part of the Nutrition Education Program. Fred converted her to liking to fly planes with engines. With Fred, hiking continued, cross country skiing was added and soon long distance bike touring became a pleasure. Stoneham, Mass. (1981-1999) was home next. Choosing not to have a paid job allowed Ann time to get into carpentry, refinishing furniture, and art glass to make the house suit them, plant a vegetable garden and a raspberry patch to give goodies for the dinner table, and sew to suit other creative urges. There were interesting volunteer opportunities to join along the way: English as a Second Language teacher, Professional Skills Roster as a job counselor, Yankee Harvest driver to pick up surplus food at the local hospital to deliver to a service agency for distribution, Bicycle Adventure Club tour leader, Red Cross Blood program, RSVP assistant, NY Finger Lakes and VT cross country ski trail organizations for scouting and clearing trails. Retirement for Fred moved home in 1999 to a rented condo in South Burlington, Vermont. His career centered on medical informatics, particularly the use of computers in hospitals to assist the day-by-day practice of medicine. July 2006 home became an apartment at a continuing care retirement community called Wake Robin. This community, giving opportunities for an active life style, is situated on a hillside in Shelburne, Vermont, with mountain and lake views. In addition to farming land Tom owned, he rented and farmed on all the land the grain dealer had been farming. He did a lot of custom plowing, planting and combining for other farmers. By the early 1970s he had added tractor trailers to the farming operation and did over the road trucking when not needed on the farm. By the mid 1970s Tom was farming nearly 1000 acres in Chester, Lancaster, Snyder and Juniata Counties, but he was loosing land to developers. He was still full of pep, so in 1981 he bought 569 acres of farm land in Steuben County in New York State and moved there. That is the year that he married Carrie as well. Over the years he has grown corn, oats, wheat, barley, soy beans, buckwheat and hay. He, also, tried raising cattle and hogs. Now he only grows hay. Tom collects antique tools.
