Martin Gettig in 1957 yearbook

Martin W. Gettig November 8, 1939 - January 31, 2010 Martin W. Gettig of Boalsburg, died Sunday, January 31, 2010 at The Fairways, Brookline Village, State College after an extended illness. Martin was born in South Bend, Indiana on November 8, 1939, a son of the late Joseph H. Gettig and Esther M. Schepple Gettig. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth M. Gettig and his beloved wife Nancy. He was raised in Michigan and later moved with his family to Pennsylvania. Martin graduated from Conestoga Valley High School in Berwyn, PA in 1957. On June 25th of 1960 he married Nancy Carolyn Buchanan in Spring Dale, Arkansas. They returned to State College where Martin entered Penn State in the Engineering curriculum. In the fall of 1961, he enlisted in the National Guards 112th Aircraft Control and Warning Flight. He and his unit were deployed to Germany by President Kennedy during the height of the Cold War during the fall of 1961 and the unit returned in August of 1962. Martin was a model aircraft and engine enthusiast. He engaged in free flight and radio controlled models. He was responsible for the development of miniature spark coils for engine ignition where weight and balance in smaller models was important. This ignition system has been used by many model builders worldwide. One word in conversation about the model engine and airplane subject opened an endless wealth of the latest information on the subject. Those who knew him were aware of his sense of humor and friendly manner. He was employed by the family businesses until his retirement. He is survived by a brother, William A. Gettig and his wife Loene, of Penn Township, Centre County. Friends may call at the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home, in Millheirn, PA from 9 a.m. until 11a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010. The funeral service will follow. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, a charity or cause of personal choice is suggested. Arrangements are in the care of the Steven R. Neff Funeral Home of Miliheim.
