Induction of William Shockley into the Conestoga Hall Athletic of Fame

October 25, 2008

The next paragraph is copied from the induction ceremony program.

William "Butch" Shockley, 1956 (Posthumously)

Butch is the measure by which all football players at Conestoga are measured.  Butch was a member of CHS Hall of Fame coach Bill Paolantonio's first team. There are few records to attest to Butch's greatness.  Those who played with Butch describe his exploits as nothing like they have seen before or since.  All those who knew and played with Butch say that as great a player as he was on the field, his achievements never came close to the man that he was off the field.  Butch played varsity football for three years at West Chester State Teacher's College.  The team went 25 - 2 during this period, and in 1957, was undefeated.  Butch played an integral role in the success of that team.  In 1959, West Chester was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion.  In 1958 and 1959, Butch was the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference First Team All League running back.  To t day, Butch continues to hold numerous running back records at West Chester.  After graduation from West Chester, Butch was drafted by the New York Titans of the newly formed American Football League.  The Titans are the forerunners of the New York Jets.  In a record that will never be broken, Butch scored the first points of the franchise.
