Betsy Schumacker (Conestoga Senior High School 1956)
There was a swimming champion
at Conestoga High School before there was a swim
team. As a junior high student, Betsy Schumacker won the National Junior
800-meter freestyle championship by shattering the previous record by 31.5 seconds. During her high school
career, most of the records Betsy broke were her own. She set three PIAA
records, the 50-yard backstroke, 50-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard
freestyle, during her junior year. Betsy continued her swimming career while a
student at MIT. As a result of her many accomplishments, Betsy Schumacker was a
true pioneer in women’s swimming. Formerly a project manager for IBM and a
Senior Lecturer at MIT, Betsy now resides in Devon.
