Marie taught German and English and was Miss Powell to us. She did her undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA where she earned a B.A. Degree in Music and German. She began teaching German and English at Conestoga High School in 1955 and taught there until 1966. A Masters Degree in Education from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA followed in 1968 as the result of her participation in a Ford Foundation Program on Preparatory Education for Teachers. In 1964 she was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship for Teachers of German, which underwrote her study at the Goethe Institute in Trier, Germany. In 1966 she married Richard W. Reed and lived in Middletown, NJ where they raised their son, Robert. Trained as an opera singer she presented solo concerts and was soloist in many of the leading oratories. During this time she was also in demand as a speaker for Christian Women’s Clubs where she shared her faith with women throughout the northeastern U.S. After being called to fulltime ministry Marie graduated in 1987 from Yale University Divinity School, where she was the recipient of the excellence in preaching award. She served on the staff of First Congregational Church, Greenwich, CT, as Interim Chaplin at Greenwich Hospital, Greenwich, CT. and was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1988 at Noroton Presbyterian Church, Noroton, CT where she was Associate Pastor. In 1991 she accepted the call to become the Pastor of the Yanceyville Presbyterian Church, Yanceyville, NC where she served until her retirement in 2001. During this time she was a member of the Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery of Salem where she served as Chairperson of both the Professional Care, Support and Development Sub-Committee and the Small Churches Strategy Sub-Committee. The latter was charged with the development, training, deployment, overseeing and commissioning of Lay Preachers for Salem Presbytery. Since her retirement from the active ministry she served on the Chaplin Staff of Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, NC and now enjoys the precious moments she can share with her six grandchildren in Latrobe, PA, and staying active with a work-out program at Fitness Today.
