Acheson, Alta Fisher (faculty) 306 Landsende Road Devon, PA 19333 610-644-0240 Husband Richard Child Judith (born 1964) Alta was Miss Acheson to us. She graduated from Quarryville High School in 1945 and then went through Millersville State College in three years earning a B.S. in math and science. For half a year she taught in a one room school near New Holland, PA and then taught at East Lampeter from 1949 until 1951. During that time she managed to take classes at the University of Pennsylvania and earned a M.S. in mathematics. It was in 1951 that many of us met her for the first time when she joined the staff at TE Junior High School as a science teacher. She took the entire seventh grade on a field trip to her parents’ farm near Quarryville. That was a memorable experience. Alta taught at TE Junior High for four years and then moved to the new Conestoga Senior High School when it opened in 1955. At Conestoga she taught math and science for one year. After that she only taught math. Alta married Richard Fisher in 1958. In 1963 she joined a special state project on algebra. That lasted for one and a half years after which she taught math at West Chester State Teachers College for two years. When her daughter Judith was three, Alta taught at the Baldwin School on a part time basis. Around 1970 the principal at Conestoga prevailed on her to return to Conestoga again as a math teacher. She did and taught there until her retirement in 1986. Alta and her husband have a campsite at the shore, a two week time share at the Outer Banks, they have traveled extensively, she enjoys playing cards and maintaining friendships that go way back. |
